Slab prep in Ellensburg and Kittitas County

The grade, the gravel and the compaction under a slab. Get this wrong and the concrete cracks no matter who pours it or how good the finish looks on day one.

Slab prep is the least visible work we do and the easiest to under-build, because once the concrete is down nobody can audit it. That is exactly why it is worth doing properly.

The work is: strip every bit of organic material, cut to the right elevation so the slab ends up at the thickness it is supposed to be, import structural fill where the native ground is not good enough, compact in lifts with a plate or a roller depending on the depth, then bring base rock up and screed it flat. Flat matters. Every low spot in the base is extra concrete you pay for, and every high spot is a thin slab waiting to crack.

Then the parts people forget: sleeves and stub-ups for plumbing and conduit set before anything is compacted over them, vapor barrier under heated space, perimeter thickening at the edges and anywhere a post or a rack lands, and reinforcement set on chairs so it ends up in the middle of the slab rather than lying on the dirt.

We do this under our own pours and we do it as a standalone for other contractors. If you have a concrete crew you like and you want the base right before they show up, that is a normal job for us.

  • Chad was incredibly professional, knowledgeable, and accommodating. We had a sports court poured last summer and plan to hire him again next spring for a retaining wall and fire pit patio.

Questions we get on slab prep

How much base rock goes under a slab?

It depends on the native soil and the load, not on a number somebody repeats. On good gravel subgrade it is less than on silt that holds water. We will tell you what is under your site before we quote the depth.

Will you prep a slab for another concrete crew?

Yes, that is routine. We will hit their elevations, set their sleeves and leave the base compacted and screeded flat. Give us their thickness and reinforcement plan and we will build to it.
